Potter / Instructor: |
I am primarily a functional potter. I work predominantly in porcelain, although not from a traditional perspective. My forms are defined by functional simplicity—the white surface of each piece is decorated with abstract designs in blues, browns, and grays. I am currently exploring the contrast of the white porcelain surface with a matte black glaze. As a potter, clay directs and influences my lifestyle. Thus, the synthesis of clay, artist, and individual is my philosophical approach. |

One piece is included on p. 90; mentioned in “Introduction” on p. 6: “In fact, this book has a large selection of work devoted to decorative technique, a range exemplified by the exuberant low-fired majolica overglaze by Farraday Newsome, as well as the restrained Japanese brushwork on high-fired porcelain by Sam Scott.” |

Northwest Craft Center Show Review: “Elena Canavier, Crafts coordinator for the National Endowment for the Arts, is in Seattle to see exhibits in galleries all over town celebrating crafts week. She said she was ‘wowed’ by the excellence of the craftsmanship in the area. ‘I was astonished to see so much work of such fine quality’…she also loved the concentration on fine ware pottery, singling out for praise, pieces by Sam Scott, on display at the NW Craft Center” (by Deloris Tarzan) |
